Gamify Your Life: Make Boring Tasks Fun!

Lesson plan overview

With this ESL lesson, students learn how the principles of gamification—such as rewards, progress tracking, competition, and goal-setting—can transform mundane chores into enjoyable activities. Through various activities, learners acquire new language while reflecting on their own habits and routines. The worksheet also helps students build confidence communicating opinions, sharing personal experiences, and developing strategies for self-improvement. Other lessons you might like are “Puzzles: a workout for the brain“, “Should we give children an allowance“, “Motivation“, “What can we learn from children?“, and “Spring cleaning“.

Activities Overview

1. Lead-In & Discussion
Students explore common daily activities and discuss which ones feel like chores and which they enjoy. They then use provided adjectives (e.g., tedious, enjoyable, time-consuming, rewarding) to describe 7–8 activities. This builds functional vocabulary for expressing opinions about everyday tasks.

2. Speaking: The Power of Play
A warm-up speaking activity introduces gamification-related vocabulary. Students discuss the questions given.

3. Vocabulary Development
Students discuss the meaning of expressions related to gamification and read a short text explaining how gamification works, completing a gap-fill exercise using the target vocabulary. This builds comprehension while reinforcing key concepts.

4. Video Listening (Multiple Parts)
Students watch a video titled “How to Gamify Your Life with ADHD” and complete progressively deeper tasks:

  • Listening A: True/false comprehension statements based on the video’s explanation of dopamine, motivation, and task initiation.

  • Listening B: Students note real examples of how the speaker gamifies her daily life.

  • Listening C: Open-ended reflection questions encourage deeper understanding and personal interpretation.

5. Post-Listening Discussion
Learners discuss questions about their own relationship with games, motivation, progress, habits, and learning through play.

6. Creative Speaking: Making Boring Tasks Fun
Students review a table of common chores (e.g., washing dishes, vacuuming, administrative work) paired with creative gamified strategies. They discuss which ideas they like and what they would change.

7. Gamify Your Own Life (Personal Task)
Learners identify 3–5 tasks they personally find draining and brainstorm ways to make them at least 1% more enjoyable using game mechanics such as timers, points, completion rewards, or friendly competition.
