Financial tips for athletes
Lesson plan overview
This ESL worksheet for B1-B2 level students explores the topic of athletes and money in sport. Students learn a lot of useful vocabulary, watch a short video and speak about the topic using the provided conversation questions and debate topics.
Vocabulary:
Vocabulary: First students look at the top 5 highest paid sportspeople in 2021. They discuss how they make their money, what their sports are and who else would be on this list. After that, they complete 2 shorts texts and learn useful vocabulary to talk about sources of income in sport (e.g. endorsements, sponsorships, TV broadcast rights). Then they practise this vocabulary by completing a gap-fill exercise and discussing the questions given. Next, students learn vocabulary to talk about salaries (underpaid, overpaid, make a living, make ends meet). They look at a few sentences and match the words to their definitions.
Listening: Students practise the target vocabulary in a pre-listening discussion. They watch a video “Olympic Medalist Lauryn Williams Shares 3 Money Tips For Athletes” and take notes about the tips the speaker gives. Then they listen again and complete extracts from the video with the words given.
Speaking: This worksheet concludes with 3 debate topics that would provide further opportunities for students to use the newly learned vocabulary about athletes and money.
Homework: 3 research topics are suggested which aim to develop the topic further. The topics, combined with the additional resources provided on theenglishflows.com provide plenty of extra opportunities for contact with topic-related vocabulary in order to reinforce and enrich it
