Don’t fall for these crypto and NFT scams!
Lesson plan overview
This ESL worksheet explores the topic of cryptocurrencies, investing in crypto and the scams we need to look out for. Students will learn vocabulary to talk about cryptocurrencies and fraud, watch a news report about common scams and talk about their experience with cryptocurrencies.
Vocabulary: after an initial discussion, students learn useful vocabulary to talk about the features of cryptocurrencies (e.g. virtual wallet, digital assets, decentralized network) by completing a short text with the words given. Then they work on phrases and words used to talk about fraud (look out for, con-man, scam, rip-off, illicit revenues). They practise this vocabulary by completing and discussing different questions. These vocabulary activities prepare students for the listening part of the lesson.
Listening: Students watch a video “Don’t fall for these crypto and NFT scams” . First they complete extracts from the video with the words given and then they watch to check their answers. Then they watch the second and third part of the video and take notes about the 2 most common scams.
After watching the video, students have a post-listening discussion about the future of cryptocurrencies.
Homework: 3 research topics are suggested which aim to develop the topic further. The topics, combined with the additional resources provided on theenglishflows.com provide plenty of extra opportunities for contact with topic-related vocabulary in order to reinforce and enrich it
