Christmas party games
Lesson plan overview
This festive lesson introduces students to the world of Christmas party games while building their vocabulary and listening skills. The activities are interactive and engaging, making them ideal for learners eager to explore holiday traditions and improve their language proficiency.
Speaking: The lesson begins with a warm-up discussion where students share their thoughts on Christmas celebrations and parties. This sets the tone for the topic and encourages students to reflect on their own holiday experiences.
Vocabulary: Next, the vocabulary segment introduces key terms related to games, such as team, winner, loser, competition, guess, hint, prize, and points. Students practice these by completing ten sentences. They then move on to learn the names of supplies commonly used in Christmas party games, such as candy cane, chocolate kisses, tinsel, gingerbread cookies, marshmallows, and jingle bells. The section also includes action verbs—shake, bounce, bob, cheat, drop, and knock over—which students practice by choosing the correct verb to complete eight sentences.
In the speaking and listening portion, students watch segments of a video showing Christmas party games without sound and try to deduce the rules of each game. This activity sharpens their observation and descriptive skills. Afterwards, they watch the video with sound and complete excerpts with the words they hear, reinforcing their listening comprehension.
The lesson concludes with several speaking-focused activities. Students engage in a lively discussion about the video, answer eight “Would you rather…?” questions, and explore creativity by researching and presenting additional games that can be played with specific objects, like a candy cane.
For extra practice, conversation cards are provided, offering students more opportunities to practice their speaking skills while discussing holiday fun.
