Lesson plan overview
This ESL lesson is about world records, and more specifically the Guinness World Records. It is most suitable for B1-level learners. Students will learn useful vocabulary, will discuss talents and skills, weird records, and will learn about superlatives. Other lessons you might like are “Idioms: talents, skills, and abilities”, “How to find your passion”, and “Hard skills and soft skills”.
The lesson starts with a discussion about unique talents.
Vocabulary: This lesson includes a variety of vocabulary activities. First, students learn expressions they are going to hear in the video (e.g. to shoot for something, hold the record, set the record, break the record, to come up with something). To practice, they complete 8 sentences with the correct expression. Then they discuss 10 questions given.
Next, students learn verbs and nouns related to the Guinness World Records they are going to see in the video (clip, crush, blow, lift). They complete the activities and before watching the video, try to guess what the records are.
Listening: Students watch a video called “10 Weirdest Guinness Book Of World Records”, and complete 2 listening comprehension activities.
Grammar: The grammar point for this lesson is superlatives. After a brief overview, students match 9 adjectives to their definitions and then use them (in their superlative forms) to talk about the Guinness records they saw in the video. Then, students complete a quiz about other Guinness World Records and discuss the records.
Finally, they are asked to research and find more weird Guinness World Records.
