Phrasal verbs: parties and celebrations

Worksheet overview

This ESL worksheet is dedicated to festive phrasal verbs. Students will learn and practise 12 phrasal verbs related to parties and celebrations. It features 2 short dialogues – about a birthday party and about Christmas, so it will be ideal to teach around Christmas and in combination with lessons related to Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year’s eve.

The first dialogue introduces the first 6 phrasal verbs (e.g. pull something off, dress up, hang out). Students read a short dialogue about organising a surprise birthday party and work out the meanings of the phrasal verbs. Then they complete 3 statements with the correct phrasal verb and discuss the statements in pairs or small groups.

The second dialogue is about Christmas. After matching the phrasal verbs from the dialogue (pig out, look forward to, sing along) to their definitions, students complete 4 sentences with their own ideas and they use them to start a conversation with a partner. For further practice, students complete a multiple-choice exercise.

The last 2 activities are focused on speaking. First, students answer a couple of questions and then they use the photos given to create a short story. The conversation cards provide further speaking opportunities.
