Phrasal verbs: mental health

Worksheet overview

This ESL worksheet is dedicated to 12 phrasal verbs used when talking about mental health. Students will learn and practise them, as well as use them in various speaking activities.

The phrasal verbs are introduced through 2 dialogues. The first one is about a person who is overwhelmed at work (e.g. burn out, stress out, go through). Students read the dialogue and match the verbs to their definitions. Then they complete a few statements with the correct phrasal verbs and discuss the statements in pairs or small groups. The second dialogue is about a person who has divorced recently (get through something, get over, cope with). After matching the phrasal verbs to their definitions, students match the 2 halves of 3 questions and ask each other the questions.

Next, students practise with a multiple-choice exercise. To wrap up, students are given 2 role-play scenarios.

The set of printable conversation cards provides further opportunities to speak about the topic, revise the target vocabulary or replace an activity from the worksheet. This worksheet will work great in combination with lessons about emotions, emotional intelligence, psychology or mental health.
