Phrasal verbs: Carnival

Worksheet overview

This ESL worksheet is about phrasal verbs related to Carnival. Students will learn and practise 12 phrasal verbs they might hear when discussing Carnival and other big celebrations. You can also check out the worksheet “Phrasal verbs: Parties and celebrations“.

All 12 phrasal verbs (e.g. dance the night away, dress up, go all out, cheer on, fly in, squeeze through, show off) are introduced through a dialogue between 2 friends talking about their plans for carnival. Students match the phrasal verbs to their definitions. Then, students complete 2 practice tasks: First, they complete 7 sentences with the correct phrasal verb. Then, they paraphrase 5 sentences, using a phrasal verb from this lesson.

The rest of the activities are focused on speaking: First, students describe 3 photos given, using a phrasal verb in each case. Then, they choose the correct verb to complete 6 questions, and discuss the questions in pairs or small groups. Finally, they are asked to organise a carnival or another festival. They discuss 5 different talking points, using phrasal verbs from the lesson.

For more speaking practice, you can use the conversation cards.
