The effects of noise pollution
Lesson plan overview
This intermediate ESL lesson plan for adults and teens explores the topic of noise pollution. Students learn useful vocabulary to talk about sounds they hear every day and have ample opportunities to talk about sounds that annoy them and possible solutions to the problem of noise pollution. You can combine it with the video-based lesson “Beyond the senses: exploring floatation tanks“.
Vocabulary: After an initial conversation, students complete a matching activity and learn the vocabulary needed to talk about the sounds they hear every day (e.g. barking, honking, wailing, screaming). After that they put phrases expressing annoyance and irritation (It bugs me, It bothers me, It drives me nuts, It soothes me) on a scale and practise the vocabulary learned to share their personal experiences and the sounds they like or hate.
Listening: Before they watch the video “Noise is slowly killing you”, students predict the information they are going to hear by answering a few questions. After that they watch the video and note down the relevant information. After that students listen for detail and complete extracts from the video with the correct word.
Speaking: The lesson concludes with a speaking activity on the possible measures individuals, governments and businesses can implement to address the issue of noise pollution.
Homework: 3 research topics are suggested which aim to develop the topic further. The topics, combined with the additional resources provided on theenglishflows.com provide plenty of extra opportunities for contact with topic-related vocabulary in order to reinforce and enrich it.
