Cultivating Friendships as an Adult
Lesson plan overview
This upper-intermediate ESL lesson explores the complexities of adult friendships, the challenges of maintaining meaningful connections, and the strategies for deepening relationships later in life. Students develop and refine vocabulary related to friendship dynamics and social connection while engaging in critical discussion about what makes friendships thrive or fade. The lesson encourages learners to reflect on their own experiences, analyse different types of friendships, and consider practical approaches to building and sustaining strong social bonds in adulthood.
Speaking:
The lesson begins with a guided discussion on the qualities students value most in friends, how friendships change with age, and what helps relationships become deeper. Learners compare their childhood friendships with their adult ones and evaluate the role of intention, effort, and shared experiences in maintaining connections.
Reading:
Students read five authentic first-person narratives depicting different types of adult friendships – from childhood friends who have drifted apart to work friends who have become deeply bonded. They analyse the dynamics of each friendship, discuss which scenarios feel most familiar, and reflect on the factors that strengthen or weaken relationships over time.
Vocabulary:
Students learn and practise key expressions related to friendship and social connection, including inseparable, to catch up, to bond, to pick up where we left off, to drift apart, to show up for (someone), to click, to vent, and to put some distance (between people). They complete matching, gap-fill, and contextual practice exercises, and apply the language through controlled and communicative speaking activities.
Listening:
Students watch a video titled “The secret to fostering friendships in adulthood.” They complete a pre-listening prediction task, watch for specific information, and check their answers. The video covers key topics such as why friendships are easier in youth, what makes them harder as adults, where most adult friendships come from, and practical small actions that help maintain connections.
Speaking & Discussion:
Students engage in post-listening discussion questions, exploring topics such as selectivity in friendships, the effort balance between friends, and what small actions make them feel valued. They also read about “catch-up culture” and discuss whether staying informed is the same as staying connected. Learners evaluate practical strategies for deepening friendships, including low-pressure activities, shared rituals, voice notes, and asking “deepener” questions.
