Creating a cozy Christmas
Lesson plan overview
This lesson focuses on creating a cozy Christmas atmosphere at home while building vocabulary and speaking skills. Students explore festive decor, seasonal activities, and ways to make their home feel warm and welcoming during the winter season. Find more Christmas-themed lessons here.
Activities Overview:
Speaking: The lesson begins with a few conversation questions.
Vocabulary: Next, students complete a vocabulary matching activity, where students pair words from two boxes to form common collocations related to a cozy Christmas, such as “fairy lights,” “scented candle,” and “crackling fireplace.” Then, students complete a vocabulary exercise using verbs like bake, wrap, play, light, and create to describe festive actions. Students then discuss the meaning of words used to describe atmosphere (e.g., cozy, homey, welcoming) while forming sentences about the atmosphere in different photos.
Listening: The listening section involves watching a video titled “10 Tips for a Cozy Christmas at Home” in two stages. The first viewing asks students to write down all tips and reflect on their connection to the holiday season. The second viewing prompts them to answer comprehension questions, focusing on items, decorations, and personal touches that enhance a cozy home environment.
Speaking: Following listening, students participate in speaking activities to discuss how they can apply the tips, share personal preferences, and compare holiday decorating traditions in their country. In small groups, they act as interior design consultants to plan a cozy, welcoming room, considering lighting, decorations, activities, and scents/flavors like cookies, cinnamon, and pine.
For more speaking practice, you can use the printable conversation cards.
This lesson is ideal for learners looking to expand their seasonal vocabulary, practice speaking and listening, and develop creative ideas for making their home feel warm, festive, and inviting.
