Medical tourism

Lesson plan overview

In this ESL worksheet, students explore medical tourism, learning how to discuss healthcare services, preventive care, treatment options, and cross-border medical travel.  This lesson is best suited for B2-level learners and is ideal for students interested in health, wellness, and global travel, or anyone preparing to study or work in an English-speaking healthcare environment.

Speaking: The lesson begins with thought-provoking warm-up questions about healthcare systems, preventive care habits, and medical experiences abroad. Students share opinions, compare systems in different countries, and discuss ethical and practical considerations when seeking treatment overseas.

Vocabulary: Learners match key medical and wellness terms—such as treatment, recovery, preventive care, wellness retreat, and follow-up care—with their definitions. This activity introduces language essential for discussing health checkups, procedures, and insurance coverage.

Practice & Speaking: Students complete a short gap-fill activity about a patient’s journey through diagnosis, treatment, and recovery, using target vocabulary in context. Guided speaking prompts encourage learners to talk about medical procedures, early detection, and preventive habits.

Speaking – Medical Tourism Procedures: A list of real-world medical tourism services (e.g., dental implants, cancer treatment, imaging scans, fertility treatment) forms the basis for discussion. Students debate the pros and cons of having these treatments abroad, considering cost, quality, and follow-up care.

Listening: Learners watch a video titled “Medical Tourism: What You Need to Know Before Booking a Ticket” and complete True/False and multiple-choice comprehension questions. The video highlights patient stories, destination comparisons, safety tips, and CDC health warnings, helping students build listening skills with authentic spoken English.

Vocabulary review: The lesson ends with a vocabulary review activity.

For more speaking practice, you can use the conversation cards.

With its combination of real-life vocabulary, engaging discussions, authentic listening practice, and personal reflection, this lesson helps learners communicate effectively about healthcare and medical travel in English.
