Floods

Lesson plan overview

This intermediate ESL lesson is a current events–based class focused on the recent catastrophic flooding in Tibet and Nepal. Students will explore the causes and impacts of flash floods, learn essential emergency vocabulary, and discuss disaster preparedness and community response. They will watch a video report on the flash floods, practice listening for key information, and engage in speaking tasks around personal experiences, flood prevention, and infrastructure challenges. Other lessons you might like are: “What if we could control the weather?,” “Heatwaves,” “Keeping a hot city cool”, “Phrasal verbs: natural disasters“.

Speaking: The lesson opens with discussion questions about floods, encouraging students to share personal or local experiences and opinions about how floods are affecting different regions. Students then reflect on the most effective flood prevention strategies and consider how communities and governments can prepare for future events.

Vocabulary: Learners are introduced to key terms related to flooding and natural disasters, such as “flash flood,” “disaster relief,” “debris,” and “search and rescue”. They complete vocabulary matching and gap-fill activities to reinforce these terms and apply them in realistic contexts.

Listening: Students watch a current news video called “How a Himalayan avalanche unleashed a trail of destruction across Nepal” focusing on the catastrophic flooding in Nepal. They practice listening for specific information, including key facts and figures, and then answer open-ended questions about the causes, consequences, rescue efforts, and people affected by the disaster.

Speaking: Post-listening, learners participate in discussions about government readiness and propose urban planning solutions.

This lesson is ideal for students interested in current events, environmental issues, and practical communication skills related to emergencies. It pairs well with other ESL materials on climate change and public safety.
