Idioms: health

Worksheet overview

With this ESL worksheet, students learn and practise 12 health-related idioms.

The first 6 idioms (e.g. as fit as a fiddle, the picture of health, drop like flies, under the weather, on the mend) are introduced through a short dialogue. Students match the idioms to their definitions. Next, they complete 5 sentences with the correct idiom. After that, they write suitable responses, using idioms from this lesson, and discuss a few conversation questions.

The rest of the idioms (e.g. take turn for the worse, in the pink, a clean bill of health, pale as a ghost) are introduced through 6 short dialogues. To practice, students discuss 5 conversation questions.

Next, students review these health-related idioms with 2 practice activities.

For more speaking practice, you can use the printable conversation cards.
