Lesson plan overview
With this fun and interactive ESL worksheet students will learn more about desserts. Designed for intermediate learners, this resource covers key vocabulary related to textures (crispy, chewy, creamy, etc.), functional language to accept food or to say you are full, speaking activities, and listening comprehension exercises. Other lessons you might like are “Superfoods“, “Idioms: eating and drinking“, “Phrasal verbs: eating“.
Speaking: Students answer questions about their favorite desserts, eating habits, and popular sweets in their country.
Speaking and reading: Desserts around the world. First, students look at photos of different desserts. Then, they read their description and match them to the correct dessert.
Vocabulary: Key food texture adjectives (crispy, chewy, creamy, gooey, etc.) are introduced with example sentences. Students complete the sentences and then complete 5 short dialogues with the correct adjective. Then, they think about other desserts and use the adjectives to describe them.
Listening: Students watch a video titled “Why You Always Seem to Have Room for Dessert”. They summarize an experiment on sensory-specific satiety and answer comprehension questions. Then they predict in which situations they would eat more food, then check their answers by watching the rest of the video.
Functional Language Practice: Students categorize expressions related to accepting or refusing food and use them in conversation role-plays.
For more speaking practice, you can use the conversation cards.
