Flu season essentials
Lesson plan overview
This lesson focuses on the flu season, helping students build their vocabulary and fluency in discussing symptoms, treatments, and preventive measures. Students will engage in reading, listening, speaking, and functional language activities designed to improve their confidence and accuracy when discussing health-related topics. Other lessons you might like are “Monkeypox” and “Phrasal verbs: health”.
Speaking: The lesson begins with a warm-up discussion where students answer questions about their experiences with the flu, such as symptoms they’ve had or how they’ve prevented illness in the past.
Vocabulary: Students are introduced to common flu symptoms through a matching activity. They match words like fever, chills, sore throat, cough, and body aches to corresponding images. This activity helps students associate new vocabulary with visual cues. Then, students work in pairs to create and practice a dialogue between a doctor and a patient.
Listening: Students watch a video titled “Differences Between Flu A and Flu B: Symptoms, Treatment, and Prevention”. They complete two listening comprehension activities, identifying key differences and recommendations for managing each type of flu.
Vocabulary: Next, students explore flu-related collocations, such as catch the flu, relieve a sore throat, get vaccinated, and lose your appetite. They use these phrases in conversation to discuss flu prevention and recovery strategies.
Reading: Students read the package leaflet of ibuprofen and complete a comprehension task to understand the medication’s uses, dosage, and precautions. This activity familiarizes them with practical medical vocabulary and reading for specific information.
Functional language: The lesson wraps up with a focus on functional language. Students learn expressions like “Get well soon!” and “Take it easy and rest” to show empathy and support when someone is sick.
For additional speaking practice, students can use conversation cards to discuss health-related topics in more depth, sharing personal experiences and advice.
