Bonfire Night (Guy Fawkes Night)
Lesson plan overview
This Intermediate ESL lesson is about the 5th of November – Bonfire Night, or Guy Fawkes Night. Students will learn about the history of the holiday and how it is celebrated, as well as useful vocabulary.
The lesson starts with a few conversation questions about celebrations and history.
Vocabulary: Next, students learn vocabulary related to Bonfire Night (e.g. bonfire, fireworks, blast, effigy) as well as words related to the history of Guy Fawkes Night (plot. conspiracy, oppression, rebellion, hunt down, crack down on). Students complete a gap-fill activity and then engage in a pre-listening discussion.
Listening: Students watch a video called “Who was Guy Fawkes”, and complete 2 listening comprehension activities. After that, they look at common Bonfire Night foods, read a bit about them, and complete a vocabulary activity related to adjectives to describe food and texture (e.g. spicy, nutty, fluffy)
Finally, they use the words to describe other dishes.
