Why are some people left-handed?

Lesson plan overview

This ESL lesson deals with the topic of handedness, and why some people are left-handed. Students will discuss myths and beliefs about left-handed people, will watch a TED talk, and will learn idioms with “hand”. You might also like the lesson “Stereotypes“.

The lesson starts with 3 speaking activities: First, students discuss a few conversation questions about left-handed people. Next, they look at common beliefs about left-handed people and say whether they think the beliefs are true or not.  Next, students are given a list of common everyday activities and are asked to discuss how easy or difficult it would be to do these activities using their non-dominant hand.

Listening: Students watch a TED talk called “Why are some people left-handed” and complete 2 listening comprehension activities. After that, they engage in a post-listening discussion.

Vocabulary: Students learn common idioms with “hand” (e.g. caught red-handed, hold your hand, to give someone a hand, in safe hands, out of hand, my hands are tied, have my hands full). Students match the idioms to their definitions and discuss a few conversation questions. Next, they complete 6 dialogues with a suitable idiom. Finally, they are asked to create their own dialogues, using idioms from this lesson.

For more speaking practice, and to review key vocabulary from this lesson, you can use the conversation cards.
