Unusual hotels
Lesson plan overview
In this B1-B2 ESL lesson, students learn about unusual hotels, and discuss their preferences about types of accommodation and amenities. You can combine it with other travel-related video-based lessons, such as: “Cruise ships“, “Accessible tourism“, “Are staycations the new vacations“, “Travel destinations” and “Tourist traps”, as well as the worksheets “Phrasal verb: travel”, “Phrasal verbs: transportation”, “Idioms: holidays”, and “Idioms: travel”.
The lesson starts with a speaking activity: students look at photos of different types of accommodation, and answer 3 questions. Then, they read the description of each accommodation type, and match it to the correct type of accommodation. Next, students answer different questions about their experiences with travelling and staying in hotels.
Listening: Students watch a video called “The 10 most unusual hotels around the world”. Before they watch the video, they predict information about each hotel based on its name. Then they watch the video and match the information given to the correct hotel. After that they engage in a post-listening discussion.
Useful language: Students look at verbs used to describe hotels and accommodations (e.g. be equipped with, features, boasts, comes with). They look at example sentences, and write their own sentences.
Finally, students are tasked with designing their own unusual hotel, incorporating words and expressions from this lesson.
