Phrasal verbs: human rights

Worksheet overview

This ESL worksheet is about phrasal verbs used to talk about human rights. Students will learn and practise 12 phrasal verbs and will discuss questions related to human rights. You can also try the worksheet “Idioms: gender equality“.

First, students take a look at a shirt tact about human rights, containing the first 6 phrasal verbs (stand up for, speak up against, crack down on, look down on, put up with). They deduce the meaning of the phrasal verbs from context and match them to their definitions. To practise, they complete 5 sentences with their own ideas and discuss their sentences with a partner.

The rest of the phrasal verbs (make up for, step up,do without, bring about) are introduced through a dialogue between 2 friends discussing human rights. After matching the verbs to their definitions, students complete 2 activities. First they complete a gapped text with the correct phrasal verbs. Then they paraphrase 6 sentences using phrasal verbs from this lesson.

The last activity is focused on speaking: students are given different human rights issues (gender equality LGBTQIA+ rights, refugee rights, indigenous rights, freedom of expression) and a few conversation questions for each one, and are asked to discuss the topics in pairs or small groups.

Use the conversation cards for additional speaking practice and ti revise this target vocabulary!
