The benefits of reading books
Lesson plan overview
This intermediate ESL lesson plan is focused on speaking. Students will discuss their reading habits and various aspects of reading books, will learn vocabulary to talk about different genres, book formats, and adjectives to describe books, and will watch a short video about the benefits of reading. It can be combined with the worksheet “Phrasal verbs: books and reading”.
The first 2 tasks are speaking tasks: first, students ask and answer 11 questions about books, reading, and their reading habits. Next, they discuss 3 quotes about reading.
Vocabulary: Students take a look at a table, containing book genres, book formats, parts of books and stories, and adjectives to describe books. They need to find the words that have been misplaced and put them in the correct category. Then they practise these vocabulary by answering a few questions that would elicit various words from the previous activity.
Listening: Students watch a video: “Why you should read every day – benefits of reading”, and complete the notes given with the words they hear. This is an additional practice of the words learned earlier in the lesson.
Speaking: Students are given a few controversial statements about books and reading and are asked to debate the statements.
Writing: Suitable for homework, the last task is for the students to write a book summary.
