Idioms: forgiveness and acceptance

Worksheet overview

This ESL worksheet is about 13 idioms and expressions that are used when talking about forgiveness and acceptance. It includes plenty of speaking activities so that students can learn them by using them. The first activity introduces 7 idioms (e.g.hold a grudge, a weight lifted off your shoulders, a bitter pill to swallow, a clean slate, bury the hatchet) through a short text. Students work out the meaning of the idioms and match them to their definitions. To practise these idioms, students complete3 sentences with their own ideas and then discuss their sentences. Next, students are given a short dialogue , including the rest of the expressions (e.g. water under the bridge, forgive and forget, make amends, take the high road). Students match the idioms to their definitions and to practise, they complete 4 questions with the correct idiom and then answer the questions. Next, students are tasked with a gap-fill activity. Lastly, students are give 3 role play prompts and are asked to role-play the situations.
This worksheet will work great as an addition to lessons about conflict and conflict resolution, relationships, friendship, and overcoming problems.
