Eurovision 2026

This B1–B2 ESL lesson plan is about the Eurovision Song Contest. Students will explore its history, structure, and cultural impact, as well as discuss current issues surrounding the 2026 edition. You can also check out the lessons “Being a citizen of the European Union” and “idiom: entertainment“.

Lead-in: The lesson begins with a short discussion where students answer general questions about Eurovision to activate prior knowledge and introduce the topic.

Listening: Students complete a quiz about Eurovision, guessing answers to multiple-choice questions and then checking them while watching a video. They then watch a video titled “How Eurovision became the Olympics of singing”. After this, students complete a vocabulary matching activity based on the video. They watch the video again and complete a gap-fill exercise using words from a box.

Vocabulary: Students complete sentence stems using their own ideas (e.g. about live events, contests, performances, and spectacles), then share their answers with a partner.

Speaking: Students discuss questions about Eurovision, such as possible changes to the contest, its role in promoting cultural exchange, and whether music competitions help new talent. They also discuss opinions on voting systems and fairness.

Reading and speaking: Students first discuss a set of sentences taken from a text about Eurovision 2026 and what they think they refer to. They then read the full text about Eurovision 2026, which focuses on boycotts, political controversy, voting rules, and returning countries. After reading, students discuss the text and its ideas.

Additional speaking: Students read and respond to opinions from Eurovision fans and then discuss follow-up questions about different viewpoints, personal reactions, and predictions for Eurovision 2026.
