Eurovision 2024
Lesson plan overview
This B1-B2 ESL lesson plan is about the Eurovision Song Contest. Students will learn about the history of the contest, watch a video about this year’s edition of Eurovision in Malmö, Sweden, and talk about music contests and Eurovision. You can also check out the lesson “Beyoncé’s tour causes inflation” and the worksheet “Idioms: entertainment“.
Speaking and reading: The lesson starts with a general discussion about Eurovision. Next, students are tasked with guessing the answers of a few questions, and then reading a text about Eurovision to check their answers.
Vocabulary: Students look at vocabulary from the text (e.g. catchy, cheesy contest, release, submit), and match the words to their definitions. To practise, students complete 5 sentences with their own ideas and then share them with a partner.
Listening: Students first engage in a pre-listening discussion, and then watch a video called “From pop to politics, what to know as Sweden prepares for the 2024 Eurovision Song Contest“. The video is broken down into 3 parts, and students complete a task for each of the parts.
Lastly, students engage in a post-listening discussion.
