The lore of Ireland
Lesson plan overview
This advanced ESL lesson introduces students to Irish myths and folklore, exploring legendary stories, mythical creatures, and dramatic storytelling language. Students will learn descriptive vocabulary while practicing listening, reading, and speaking skills. It is perfect for lessons around St. Patrick’s Day, world mythology themes, or creative writing classes! Other lessons related to Ireland you might like are: “The Irish Potato Famine: A tragedy in history“, “St. Patrick’s Day traditions explained”, “St. Patrick’s Day“
Speaking: Students discuss questions related to mythology
Vocabulary: Students match dramatic words and expressions to their definitions (challenge, fit of rage, hatch, shatter, tremble, roar, loom, pound). They then complete sentences with the correct word in the right form to reinforce understanding. The focus is on stronger, more expressive language — the kind used in myths, legends, and heroic tales.
Listening: Students watch a TEdED video titled “The Irish Myth of the Giant’s Causeway” and summarize the role of each character (Finn MacCool, Benandonner, and Oonagh). Then, they watch the video again and complete one more listening comprehension activity.
Reading Task – Mythical Creatures: Students read descriptions of four Irish mythological creatures:
- The Leprechaun – A mischievous trickster guarding hidden gold.
- The Banshee – A ghostly woman whose wail foretells death.
- The Pooka – A shapeshifter that leads travelers astray.
- The Dullahan – A terrifying headless rider who signals impending doom.
Students answer comprehension questions and compare Irish myths to legends from their own cultures.
Vocabulary Expansion – Powerful Storytelling Words: Students replace common words with dramatic synonyms to elevate storytelling (e.g., Clever → Cunning, Prediction → Prophecy, Sad → Sorrowful, Die → Perish, Hide → Lurk, Death → Doom). Students are then given more examples and complete a paraphrasing activity to practice these words.
Writing & Speaking Task – Myth Presentation
Students choose a myth or legend from their culture and present it to the class using at least five words from the lesson.
