Phrasal verbs: the weather
Worksheet overview
With this ESL worksheet, students will learn phrasal verbs related to the weather. They will see and practise 13 weather-related phrasal verbs. You might also like the worksheet “Phrasal verbs: natural disasters”.
The first 5 phrasal verbs (brighten up, break through, warm up, cool down cloud over) are introduced through a short dialogue. Students match the verbs to their definitions. To practise, they complete 5 sentences with the correct phrasal verb.
Next, students read a second short dialogue, including the verbs let up, pour down, clear up, blow over, to be rained off. After matching the verbs to their definitions, students are asked to rewrite 5 sentences with the correct phrase verb (this activity includes verbs from the first group of phrasal verbs as well).
Next, students read a short weather forecast and see the rest of the phrase verbs (freeze over, blow away, to be snowed in). To practise all the phrasal verbs, they complete a multiple-choice activity.
The last 2 activities are focused on speaking.
First, students are asked to choose one picture and create a weather forecast, using some of the phrasal verbs from this lesson.
Finally, they are given 6 discussion statements.
For more speaking practice, and to revise these weather-related phrasal verbs, you can use the conversation cards.
