Phrasal verbs: telephone

Worksheet overview

This ESL worksheet is dedicated to telephone phrasal verbs. It can be used both in General English and Business English classes. It is useful for call centre and customer service representatives, as well as anyone who needs to speak on the phone in English.

The first 4 phrasal verbs are introduced through a short dialogue (e.g. hold on, call someone back, speak up). Students work out the meaning of the verbs and then match them to their definitions. To practise, they complete 2 questions with the correct phrasal verbs and then discuss the questions in pairs or small groups. The other 8 phrasal verbs (get through, get off the phone, pick up, walk someone through something) are introduced with another short dialogue. To practise them, students complete a few sentences so that they are true for them. As an additional practice task, students complete 5 sentences using the correct phrasal verb. The last activity focused on speaking. First, students are given 2 role-play situations. Then, students are asked to brainstorm situations in which they speak on the phone at work and then they role-play the situations. Use the printable conversation cards to practise and revise these phrasal verbs even further!
