Phrasal verbs: role models
Worksheet overview
This ESL worksheet is dedicated to phrasal verbs when talking about role models. It is suitable to use if you want to discuss topics like athletes, celebrities and parenthood with students. Students will learn and practise 12 phrasal verbs.
The first 8 phrasal verbs (look up to, live up to, speak out, set someone apart, stand up for, give back) are introduced through 4 short texts about 4 athletes (Serena Williams, Marcus Rashfortd, Simone Biles, and Rafael Nadal). Students read the texts and match the verbs to their definitions. Then, they complete 7 sentences with the correct phrasal verbs. After that, they discuss 9 discussion questions.
Next, the rest of the phrasal verbs (bring up, turn to, measure up to, model oneself on) are introduced through 4 short dialogues. Students match the verbs to their definitions. Then, they complete 4 sentences with their own ideas. After that, they paraphrase 4 sentences with the correct phrasal verbs.
Next, they are given 5 talking points and discuss different role models (parents, athletes, celebrities, fictional characters, mentors).
Finally, they are asked to research and write a paragraph about a person they admire, using the phrasal verbs from this lesson.
For more speaking practice, you can use the conversation cards.
