Worksheet overview

This worksheet explores the phrasal verbs used to talk about relationships and dating. Students learn and practise 12 different phrasal verbs. This worksheet could be combined with various lesson plans related to relationships and dating in order to reinforce this important vocabulary. The first activity students work on is a short text which introduces 8 phrasal verbs (e.g. hit it off, fall for, drift apart). Students read the text and match the phrasal verbs to their definitions. Next, students complete different sentences with their own opinion and use them as conversation starters. After that students match 5 sentences in order to discover the meaning of phrasal verbs such as hit on someone, get over, make out. There is a quiz activity to test students’ knowledge about these phrasal verbs. The last communicative activity includes different questions which students first need to complete and then discuss in pairs. The worksheet concludes with a couple of suggestions on how to practise outside of the classroom and find more opportunities to see these phrasal verbs in real-life situations. This ESL worksheet, in combination with the conversation questions are a great way to learn and use some common phrasal verbs about relationships. It can be used in one class dedicated to the topic of phrasal verbs, or better yet, in several topic-related classes by using 1 or 2 activities each time and revising frequently.
