Phrasal verbs: Hobbies
Worksheet overview
This ESL worksheet is dedicated to phrasal verbs used when talking about hobbies. Students will learn and practise 12 phrasal verbs, and will discuss their past, present, and possible future hobbies.
The first 8 phrasal verbs (e.g. take up, sign up for, work on, give up, brush up on) are introduced through a short dialogue. Students work out the meaning of the phrasal verbs from context and match them to their definitions. To practise, they complete 3 sentences with their own ideas. Next, they complete a second dialogue with 5 of the phrasal verbs, and see more phrasal verbs (e.g. check out, take part in, get into). Then, students complete 7 short dialogues with the correct phrasal verb. Then they choose 3 of them, and use them to create their own dialogues.
To get some speaking practice, students match the 2 halves of 6 questions, and ask and answer the questions with a partner.
Finally, students paraphrase 6 sentences, using the correct hobby-related idiom from this lesson.
For more speaking practice, and to review these phrasal verbs, use the conversation cards.
