Phrasal verbs: friendship

Worksheet overview

This ESL worksheet is dedicated to phrasal verbs about friendship. Students will learn and practise 12 phrasal verbs and talk about their friends.

The first 7 phrasal verbs are introduced through a short dialogue (hang out, catch up, get along, grow apart). Students work out the meaning of the verbs and then match them to their definitions. To practise, they complete 3 sentences with information about themselves and then they use the sentences to start a conversation with a partner.

The rest of the phrasal verbs (bond over, let someone down, stick up for someone) are introduced with 5 sentences, each containing a phrasal verb. Students need to match the sentences containing phrasal verbs to sentences with a similar meaning. To practise them, students are given 3 conversation questions As an additional practice task, students complete a multiple-choice task and then rephrase 3 sentences given, using the correct phrasal verb. Lastly, students are given 3 statements about friendship to discuss in pairs or small groups.

Use the printable conversation cards to practise and revise these phrasal verbs even further! This worksheet can be combined with lessons about friendship, loalty and relationships.
