Phrasal verbs: elections
Worksheet overview
This ESL worksheet is designed to enhance students’ understanding of phrasal verbs commonly associated with elections and political contexts. It includes a variety of engaging activities aimed at helping learners recognize, interpret, and use these phrasal verbs effectively. You might also like the worksheet “Phrasal verbs: politics”.
The first 7 phrasal verbs (e.g. run for, go up against, vote for, count on, win over) are introduced through a short dialogue. Students match the verbs to their definitions and then complete a multiple-choice activity. After that, they are given discussion prompts to practice using these verbs.
Next, the rest of the phrasal verbs (pull out of, call for, campaign for, back down on) are introduced through short dialogues. To practice them, students complete a gap-fill activity.
The rest of the activities are focused on speaking: First, students discuss elections in their countries. Next, they debate 4 statements related to elections. Finally, they are asked to imagine they are running for a political position and prepare a speech.
As an additional activity, there are a few conversation questions related to the U.S. presidential election.
For more speaking practice, and to review these phrasal verbs related to elections, you can use the conversation cards.
