Idioms: emotional impact and reactions

Worksheet overview

With this lesson, learners explore natural idiomatic expressions for talking about emotional impact, difficult experiences, and situations that affect them deeply. The target idioms are useful in everyday spoken English and help learners express emotional reactions in a more natural and nuanced way.

Activities Overview

Students begin by reading a short dialogue about criticism, disagreements, and emotional reactions. They identify and explore idioms such as push my buttons, get under your skin, hit a nerve, rub salt in the wound, let it roll off my back, and not lose any sleep over it. Learners match each expression to its definition, developing their understanding of meaning and how these common English idioms are used in realistic conversations.

Next, students complete contextualised sentences using the target idioms from the first activity. Speaking activities then encourage students to discuss personal experiences and situations while naturally using the target idioms in conversation.

Students are then introduced to a second group of emotional idioms, including hit too close to home, strike a chord, make my heart melt, have a chip on my shoulder, leave a mark, cut deep, and tug at my heartstrings. Through short dialogues and matching tasks, learners explore how these expressions describe strong emotions, personal connections, sympathy, tenderness, and lasting emotional effects.

Learners then practise choosing the most suitable idiom for different situations and complete sentences with their own ideas. These activities help students recognise subtle differences in meaning and develop confidence using idiomatic language to describe films, songs, books, memories, relationships, criticism, and emotional experiences.

Finally, discussion activities give learners the opportunity to use the target idioms more spontaneously. Students discuss what kinds of comments push their buttons, whether they let criticism roll off their back, what experiences they have lost sleep over, and whether they have a chip on their shoulder about anything. They also discuss statements about criticism, childhood experiences, films, music, and emotional reactions, encouraging extended speaking practice and personal expression.

This English idioms worksheet is ideal for English lessons focused on emotions, feelings, personal experiences, communication, and everyday conversation.

For additional speaking practice, you can use the printable conversation cards to encourage extended discussions and help learners apply these emotional idioms naturally in spontaneous conversations.
