Idioms: corruption

Worksheet overview

With this ESL worksheet students will learn and practise idioms and expressions related to corruption within organisations and governments. The lesson is related to politics and power.

The first 9 idioms about corruption (e.g. on the take, everyone has their price, grease someone’s palm, line one’s pockets) are introduced through a short dialogue. Students match the idioms to their definitions. To practise, they look at 8 sentences, find the incorrect word, and replace it with the correct word to create idioms. Then, they discuss 5 conversation questions, using idioms from this lesson.

The rest of the idioms and expressions (e.g. feather one’s own nest, under the table, money talks) are introduced through 4 short dialogues. After matching the expressions to their definitions, students discuss a few questions.

Next, to practise all idioms from this lesson, students paraphrase 6 sentences, using the correct idiom.

Finally, they debate a few questions.

There is a writing homework task to summarise a news article, using idioms from this lesson.

For more speaking practice, you can use the conversation cards.
