a christmas tree with presents, and the word "idioms"

Idioms: Christmas

Worksheet overview

This worksheet is dedicated to 12 idioms about Christmas and is ideal to use around Christmas in combination with lessons about the winter holiday season, Christmas and celebrations.

The first 7 idioms are introduced through a short dialogue. Students read the dialogue, work out the meaning of each expression and match it to its definition (e.g. white Christmas, secret Santa, the more the merrier, it’s the thought that counts). After completing 3 sentences with the correct idiom and then use the sentences to start a conversation with a partner.

Next, students are given 5 sentences which introduce the rest of the idioms (e.g. be like Christmas coming early, Christmas comes but once a year, stocking stuffer). For each sentence, students decide which is the correct meaning of the idiom. After that students rephrase 4 sentences, using the correct idiom from this lesson. The last 2 activities are focused on speaking: first students complete the sentences given with their opinions and talk about their sentences and lastly, there is a debate topic for students to discuss. The printable conversation cards provide further opportunities for speaking practice and revision of the target vocabulary.
