Phrasal verbs: Sleep

Worksheet overview

This ESl worksheet explores the phrasal verbs used to talk about sleep. It is a great way to revise and introduce new vocabulary and includes various communicative activities to encourage conversation. The first activity introduces 5 phrasal verbs (e.g. crash out, stay up, doze off). Students work out the meaning of the verbs from context and then match them to their definitions. Students then complete and discuss different statements and share their personal experiences. Students learn more phrasal verbs with the next activity (e.g. lie down, sleep off, sleep through) and use the statements given as conversation starters. This worksheet includes a quiz to test students’ knowledge and an additional speaking activity. A few suggestions are given on where to see these verbs in real-life context. This ESL worksheet, together with the conversation cards can be used in various classes in order to practise these sleep related phrasal verbs. It would work great as an addition to lessons about sleep, sleeping disorders, healthy lifestyle, good habits and well-being
