Idioms: similarities and differences
Worksheet overview
This ESL worksheet introduces students to idioms related to similarity and difference, helping them express comparisons more naturally in English. Through a variety of interactive exercises, students will learn and practice 13 expressions.
The first 5 idioms (e.g. in the same ballpark, be a far cry from, be worlds apart) are introduced through 5 short dialogues. Students match the bolded idioms to their correct definitions and then complete a gap-full activity.
Next, students are given partial idioms with missing words (e.g., cut from the same ___). They must fill in the blanks with the correct words to complete the idioms. Students replace highlighted words in sentences with the correct idioms from the lesson. This activity encourages them to use idioms naturally while reinforcing their understanding of their meanings.
The rest of the activities are focused on speaking.
First, students discuss different talking points that prompt them to use the idioms. Then, they discuss 4 conversation questions. Then, students are given statements to agree or disagree with. Finally, students work in pairs or small groups to discuss their interests, likes, and dislikes. If they agree on something, they respond with That makes two of us! This activity promotes conversation, fluency, and engagement while using idiomatic language.
For more speaking practice, you can use the printable conversation cards.
