Idioms: exaggerating
Worksheet overview
This ESL lesson focuses on teaching 13 idioms and expressions related to exaggeration. Students will learn their meanings, practice using them, and apply them in discussions and dialogues.
The first seven idioms (e.g., make a mountain out of a molehill, drama queen, all bark and no bite, over the top, make a scene) are introduced through dialogues. Students match each idiom to its definition, choose appropriate responses for five dialogues, and discuss five conversation questions while incorporating the idioms.
The lesson then introduces the remaining idioms (e.g., blow things out of proportion, go overboard, laid it on a bit thick, make a fuss), with students practicing them through a gap-fill activity.
To encourage fluency and application, students create short dialogues based on given scenarios, debate statements using the idioms related to exaggerating, and participate in discussions about exaggeration using the provided talking points.
Printable conversation cards are included for additional speaking practice.
