Idioms: unrealistic expectations and false hope

Worksheet overview

This ESL worksheet focuses on idioms and expressions related to unrealistic expectations, false hope, and overly optimistic thinking. With examples drawn from both everyday life and business scenarios, this lesson is versatile and suitable for General English or Business English learners. Students will learn and practice 12 idioms while engaging in dynamic activities designed to enhance vocabulary retention and fluency.

The first seven idioms (e.g., wishful thinking, a reality check, dead in the water, grasping at straws, isn’t going anywhere) are presented through five short dialogues. These dialogues revolve around common themes (e.g., relationships. future plans, failing projects) Students complete a gap-fill activity with the idioms and discuss four questions that encourage their use.

The next set of idioms (e.g., a lost cause, a sinking ship, pin your hopes on, throw cold water on) is introduced through a business-related dialogue between two partners. Students match idioms to their definitions. Then they paraphrase five sentences using the new idioms.

The rest of the activities are focused on speaking:

1. Discussion Questions: Students reflect on personal experiences or situations where they encountered unrealistic expectations or false hope.

2. Creative Responses: Students respond to prompts by writing suitable replies using idioms from the lesson. Then they brainstorm three “crazy ideas” and share them with a partner, who evaluates each idea by using an appropriate idiom.

3. Debate Statements: Students debate two provocative statements related to optimism, practicality, or goal-setting, incorporating idioms to strengthen their arguments.

4. Dialogue Creation: Students role-play one of two scenarios, creating a dialogue that incorporates idioms learned in the lesson.

Printable conversation cards are provided for further speaking practice, helping students solidify their understanding of idioms through real-life simulations.
